Bratislava University of Economics and Business (EUBA) has been ranked in the 551-700 range in Economics and Econometrics in the latest edition of the prestigious QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026. This is an extraordinary result – EUBA remains the only university from Slovakia to have made it into the rankings in this category at all.
What is the QS ranking and why does it matter
The QS World University Rankings, compiled by the British company Quacquarelli Symonds, are, together with Times Higher Education (THE) and Shanghai's ARWU (Academic Ranking of World Universities), among the so-called Big Three of the most followed global university rankings. The 16th edition of this ranking, published in March 2026, evaluated more than 21,000 study programs from approximately 1,900 institutions from 100 countries, divided into 55 fields in five broad areas. For Slovak higher education, QS is the only one of all three top rankings that publishes a field rating - that is, not only the overall position of the university, but also performance in individual scientific disciplines.
Methodology: five pillars of evaluation
The QS Subject Ranking for Economics and Econometrics is based on five indicators:
- Academic reputation – a global survey of thousands of academics nominating the best workplaces in their field. It has the highest weight in social sciences, including economics.
- Employer reputation – a parallel survey of global employers of graduates.
- Citations per publication – the average number of citations per article published by university staff, drawn from the Scopus database of Elsevier over the past five years.
- H-index – a combined indicator of the productivity and impact of scientific work.
- International Research Network – the intensity and breadth of international research collaboration.
The data is based on an analysis of 16.4 million academic articles and responses from more than 151,000 academics and over 101,000 employers. The weights of individual indicators are adjusted according to the specifics of the field – in economics and econometrics, the reputation component and the quality of publication output measured via Scopus generally have the greatest weight.
“The QS methodology evaluates exactly what EUBA has been systematically working on for a long time – the quality of the publication output indexed in the Scopus database, the impact of our scientific works measured through citations and H-index, and the breadth of international research cooperation. The fact that we remain in the 551–700 range among the 700 best institutions in the world in the field is the result of the university’s strategic focus on excellent science, consistent work with young researchers, and building international research networks. “For us, this is clear feedback on the quality system that we have been building at the university for a long time – and at the same time a guide to where to invest further.”
Assoc. Prof. Jana Péliová, PhD., Vice-Rector for Accreditation and Quality
What does this mean for EUBA?
The QS ranking means that EUBA is not only the domestic number one in economic disciplines, but also stands up to competition from several hundred universities from around the world. The position of the only Slovak university in the ranking in the field of Economics and Econometrics confirms that EUBA has long maintained an internationally comparable quality of science and education in economics and econometrics and remains a reference point for economic education in Slovakia.
It is also a commitment for the university itself - to continue investing in high-quality science, international cooperation, and support for young researchers.
“The ranking in the QS World University Rankings by Subject is the result of long-term and purposeful work of our teachers, researchers and all faculties. The fact that the Bratislava University of Economics and Business is the only Slovak university in this field among the approximately seven hundred best institutions in the world for the second year in a row does not entitle us to satisfaction – on the contrary, it obliges us to continue. We are investing in high-quality science, international research cooperation and the support of the young scientific generation, because only in this way can we be a trustworthy partner for students, practice and the entire society. Our goal is for a degree from EUBA to open doors anywhere in the world.”
Prof. Ferdinand Daňo, PhD., Rector of the Bratislava University of Economics and Business.
The QS World University Rankings are compiled once a year and its next, 17th edition, will be published in the spring of 2027. EUBA has long represented Slovakia in the field of Economics and Econometrics as the only domestic institution and wants to confirm this position in the coming years.
