Model UN at EUBA: A Year-Long Academic Project with Tradition

The Bratislava University of Economics and Business (EUBA) hosted the 19th edition of its Model Conference, a flagship educational initiative that offers a unique approach to teaching diplomacy in Slovakia. EUBA remains the only university in the country to systematically organize Model United Nations (Model UN) simulations.

The project runs throughout the academic year and culminates in a final plenary session held in the university’s main auditorium.

“We started modestly as an elective course lasting one semester, but over time we have developed it into a year-long project culminating in a plenary session simulating the United Nations General Assembly,” said Kristína Baculáková, the conference organizer.

Water as a Global Challenge: Connecting Education and Research

This year’s conference focused on the effective management of water resources, one of the most pressing global challenges today. The topic reflects not only the impacts of climate change but also the growing importance of water in geopolitical relations.

EUBA is also actively engaged in this field through international research collaboration.

“We are part of the Water4All project, which brings together dozens of partners from around the world, and we aim to reflect this topic in both our research and teaching activities,” Baculáková added.

Students as Diplomats: Simulating Real-World Negotiations

The Model Conference allows students of the Faculty of International Relations to step into the role of diplomats in realistic scenarios. Within the course Negotiations in Diplomatic Practice, they represent different countries and conduct negotiations based on real economic and political data.

The simulations involve a wide range of countries—from industrialized powers to states facing water scarcity—creating a complex environment for negotiation and consensus-building.

A Student-Led Project with Practical Impact

A distinctive feature of the conference is that it is organized entirely by students, who are responsible for everything from fundraising to logistics and communication.

“Our decisions are not based on fictional scenarios—they reflect real geopolitics and the economic realities of individual countries,” explained student coordinator Naďa Esterková.

In addition to academic knowledge, students develop practical skills such as negotiation, teamwork, and project management.

Connecting with Practice and Career Opportunities

An important part of the conference is the involvement of experts from international organizations, the diplomatic community, and the non-profit sector. Students gain valuable feedback on their work while also building professional networks.

Preparing the Next Generation of Diplomats

The Model Conference at EUBA demonstrates the importance of practice-oriented education. It helps students better understand international relations and prepares them for careers in diplomacy, international organizations, and public administration.

The project remains one of the flagship activities of the Faculty of International Relations and a key contributor to shaping future professionals in the global arena.
