For the eighth year in a row, students studying the study programme Financial Markets and Investment (second-level studies) have had the opportunity to test their accumulated knowledge and skills on a global scale in the Rotman International Trading Competition (RITC) 2024.
Under the expert guidance of Assoc. Prof. Ing. Jana Kotlebová, PhD., Assoc. Prof. Ing. Peter Árendáš, PhD. and doctoral student Ing. Marek Dávid Vateha, who attended the competition in past years as a student, of the Department of Banking and International Finance (EUBA's Faculty of Economics and Finance), the student team:
- Bc. Ema Recká,
- Bc. Jakub Klein,
- Bc. Erik Krchnák,
- Bc. Dominik Kucbel,
competed with a further 41 universities from across the world in the competition held at the Rotman School of Management (University of Toronto, Canada) between 21 and 23 February 2024.
The students have achieved the second-best historical result on an international scale, taking an excellent 13th place overall. Our team has confirmed its long-term standing as one of the top European universities, placing as a third European university. The competition this year was fierce, and yet the University of Economics in Bratislava managed to leave behind renowned universities such as University of Ottawa (Canada), Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), Boston University (USA), University of Sydney (Australia), New York University (USA) or Princeton University (USA).
The overall winner of the RITC 2024 was the team representing Baruch College (USA).
RITC enables participating teams to compete via a trading platform (Rotman Interactive Trader), using a wide range of realistically simulated market scenarios. This year, the competition organisers prepared 6 tasks, giving the students an opportunity to try their hand at (1) trading in prompt and forward electricity markets, (2) undertaking transactions in crude oil spot and future markets, (3) managing liquidity in ETF markets, (4) identifying incorrectly priced options, and to judge for themselves how difficult it is to develop in Python automated, algorithmic trading strategies (5) pricing stock using the CAPM model, and (6) utilising arbitrage between shares and ETF instruments denominated in different currencies.
We are delighted that our university is gradually settling at the top of the ranking list and we congratulate the students on their achievement. We hope that this result will contribute to motivating lower-year students to get involved in the preparations for future editions of the RITC or RETC (the competition’s European round).
We thank our sponsors Tatra banka, a.s., U.P. o.c.p, a.s. and BENCONT GROUP, a.s.. Special thanks also go to our graduates (former contest participants): Ing. Juraj Dedinský, PhD. and Ing. Mário Zeman for their support.
