On March 20, 2018, Rector of the UEBA, Mr. Ferdinand Daňo, welcomed the Ambassador of the Republic of Austria in Slovakia, H.E. Mr. Helfried Carl. The meeting was attended also by Vice-Rector for International Relations Mr. Boris Mattoš, who informed the guest about the cooperation between the UEBA and Austrian universities.
At the beginning of his lecture at Diplomacy in Practice, Ambassador Carl mentioned the common heritage of Austria and Slovakia, as both countries share a common history, they make part of the Central European space. He emphasized the need to focus more on common features than the differences between these two countries. Another topic presented was future developments in the EU. The Ambassador paid special attention to the preparation of the Austrian Presidency in the Council of the EU (the second half of 2018). The presiding country will have to deal with Brexit, migration, border control, and elections to the European Parliament. The integration and stability of the Western Balkans have long been among Austrian foreign policy priorities, and it is therefore natural that this topic has become the main objective of the forthcoming Austrian Presidency. At the end of the lecture, Ambassador Carl willingly answered questions from students about neutrality, internal affairs, demography, and other topics
